Is your Toyota Prius key fob starting to act up? For 2004-2009 models, a common culprit is a low battery. You might notice your Prius beeping after you turn it off, experiencing reduced range when trying to lock or unlock your doors remotely, or the key symbol flashing on your dashboard. Don’t worry, replacing the battery in your 06 Prius key fob, or any fob within the 2004-2009 range, is a straightforward DIY task you can handle at home with just a few simple tools. Since these Prius models rely entirely on the key fob for starting – there’s no traditional key slot – it’s essential to address a weak battery promptly to avoid getting stranded. Typically, these original Panasonic batteries last for 3 to 5 years, so if you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s likely time for a replacement.
Tools Needed:
- Precision Philips head screwdriver (#0)
- Small flat-head screwdriver or paperclip
Parts/Supplies Needed:
- CR2032 Battery – the standard replacement for your 2004-2009 Toyota Prius key fob.
Let’s get started with the battery replacement process:
-
Remove the Mechanical Key
With the buttons on your key fob facing upwards, locate the small spring-loaded release. Slide this holder firmly to the left (indicated in RED in the image). While holding it to the left, pull the mechanical key straight up and out of the fob (as shown by the BLUE arrow). Set the key aside for now.
-
Open the Key Fob Casing
Flip the key fob over so the buttons are now facing downwards. Again, you’ll see a spring-loaded holder. This time, slide it to the right (RED). While keeping it slid to the right, gently push the back panel upwards (BLUE). This back panel should slide off, revealing the inside of your Prius key fob. If you’re having trouble getting a grip, try using a rubber glove for better friction.
-
Access the Battery Compartment
With the back cover removed, you’ll see the internal components and a small battery cover plate secured by four screws. Using your Philips #0 screwdriver, carefully remove the four screws circled in RED in the image. Once the screws are out, use a paperclip or a thin flat-head screwdriver to gently pry up the battery cover plate. The BLUE arrow in the image indicates a good spot to insert your tool for prying.
-
Replace the 06 Prius Key Fob Battery
Now you can access the old CR2032 battery. Take note of the orientation of the battery before removing it – the positive (+) side should be facing upwards, towards the cover panel. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new CR2032 battery, ensuring the positive (+) side is facing the correct way.
-
Reassemble Your Key Fob
Assembly is simply the reverse of the disassembly process. Carefully place the battery cover plate back into position and secure it with the four screws you removed earlier. Then, slide the back panel of the key fob back into place until it clicks securely. Finally, slide the mechanical key back into the key fob until it locks into position.
You’ve now successfully replaced the battery in your 06 Prius key fob! Test the fob to ensure it’s working correctly. If you followed these steps, your key fob should be functioning like new, resolving those annoying beeps and restoring your remote range. This simple maintenance task can save you time and money compared to a dealership visit, keeping your 2004-2009 Toyota Prius running smoothly.
