Lost your key fob or need to program a new one for your 2004 Toyota Corolla? Good news! You can program your key fob yourself without a trip to the dealership. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to program your 2004 Toyota Corolla key fob, saving you time and money.
Before you begin, ensure your vehicle is in the correct state for programming:
- No key is in the ignition.
- The driver’s door is open, and all other doors are closed.
- The driver’s door is unlocked.
Now, follow these steps to enter the key fob programming mode and register your new remote.
Selecting the Programming Mode
To initiate the programming sequence, you’ll use a combination of key insertions and door operations to select the desired mode. There are different modes for adding a key fob, rewriting all codes, and even disabling the wireless function.
-
Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice within 5 seconds.
-
Close and open the driver’s door twice within 40 seconds. Then, insert the key into the ignition and remove it.
-
Close and open the driver’s door twice again within 40 seconds. Then, insert the key into the ignition cylinder and leave it in.
-
Turn the ignition switch from LOCK to ON and back to LOCK at approximately 1-second intervals. Repeat this ON-LOCK cycle a specific number of times to select a mode according to the table below:
- 1 time: Add mode (to add a new key fob while keeping existing ones)
- 2 times: Rewrite mode (to erase all old key fobs and program new ones)
- 3 times: Prohibition mode (to erase all key fobs and disable wireless door lock function)
- 5 times: Confirmation mode (to check how many key fobs are currently programmed)
Important Note: If you cycle the ignition 0, 4, or 6 or more times, the system will not respond, and no mode will be selected.
-
After correctly selecting a mode, the power door locks will cycle LOCK-UNLOCK automatically within 3 seconds to confirm the selected mode. The number of LOCK-UNLOCK cycles corresponds to the selected mode (see table above).
For example, if you selected Add mode (1 cycle), you’ll see one LOCK-UNLOCK cycle.

Hint for Confirmation Mode: In confirmation mode, the doors will lock and unlock once for each programmed key fob. If no key fobs are programmed, the doors will lock and unlock 5 times. Confirmation and Prohibition modes will end the programming procedure after the LOCK-UNLOCK response.
Registering Your New Key Fob (Add or Rewrite Mode)
Once you’ve successfully selected either Add or Rewrite mode, you can proceed to register your new 2004 Toyota Corolla key fob.
-
Within 40 seconds after the door locks cycle to indicate Add or Rewrite mode, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the key fob simultaneously for 1 to 1.5 seconds.
-
Within 3 seconds of releasing both buttons, press and hold either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the key fob for more than 1 second.
-
If the key fob programming is successful, the door locks will cycle LOCK-UNLOCK once within 3 seconds. If the door locks cycle LOCK-UNLOCK twice, the programming has failed. In case of failure, repeat the entire programming procedure from the beginning.
-
If you need to program multiple key fobs, repeat steps 1-3 within 40 seconds of the previous successful programming.

Important Reminders:
- You can program up to 4 key fobs for your 2004 Toyota Corolla.
- The programming mode will automatically end if:
- 40 seconds elapse without a new key fob registration.
- Any door is opened.
- The key is inserted into the ignition cylinder.
- 4 key fobs are already programmed.
By following these instructions carefully, you can easily program your 2004 Toyota Corolla key fob and regain full remote access to your vehicle. Enjoy the convenience of keyless entry and the peace of mind knowing you’ve handled it yourself!
