2005 Buick LaCrosse Key Fob Programming: A Step-by-Step Guide

Programming your 2005 Buick LaCrosse key fob can be a straightforward process, often achievable without the need for a locksmith or dealership visit. This guide provides comprehensive instructions for programming your key fob, whether you have an existing working key or not. It’s important to note that these procedures are designed to add new keys and will not erase previously programmed keys. Ensure that any new key is properly cut before beginning the programming process.

Programming Your 2005 Buick LaCrosse Key Fob with a Working Key

This method is applicable if you already have a programmed and functioning key for your Buick LaCrosse. This procedure will allow you to program additional keys to your vehicle system.

  1. Start the Vehicle: Insert your existing, working key into the ignition. Turn the key to the ignition position and start the engine.
  2. Turn Off and Remove Key: Once the engine is running, turn the ignition key back to the “off” position. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder.
  3. Insert New Key and Turn to “On”: Within 10 seconds of removing the original key, insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition. Turn the key to the “on” position. Do not start the engine at this stage.
  4. Observe Security Light: Keep an eye on the security light on your dashboard. Once the new key is successfully programmed, the security light should turn off. Due to the speed of programming, you might not visibly notice the light illuminate and then turn off. If your 2005 Buick LaCrosse model does not have a security light, proceed to the next step after waiting for an extended period to ensure programming completion.
  5. Verification Wait Time (If No Security Light): If your vehicle is not equipped with a security light, it is crucial to wait for a minimum of 10 minutes and 45 seconds after step 3. This waiting period ensures that the key programming process is fully completed.
  6. Repeat for Additional Keys: If you need to program more than one additional key fob, simply repeat steps 1 through 5 for each new key.

Programming Key Fobs for 2005 Buick LaCrosse Models with Push Button Ignition

For 2005 Buick LaCrosse vehicles equipped with push-button ignition systems (common in North America, excluding Canada), there are two distinct programming procedures depending on whether you have a working transmitter (key fob) or not.

1. Programming with at Least One Working Transmitter

If you currently possess at least one functional key fob (transmitter) for your 2005 Buick LaCrosse, you can use the following procedure to program additional transmitters. Ensure all transmitters – both existing and new – are with you during this process. Also, confirm the new key blade is cut correctly before starting.

  1. Place Working Transmitter: Position the recognized, already programmed transmitter in the vehicle’s cupholder.
  2. Use New Key in Door Lock: Insert the new, unprogrammed key blade into the physical lock cylinder located on the exterior of the driver’s side door. Turn the key to the “unlock” position five times in rapid succession within a 10-second timeframe. The Driver Information Center (DIC) display should then show the message “Ready For Remote #2,3,4 or 5.” This indicates the system is ready to learn a new transmitter.
  3. Place New Transmitter in Pocket: Locate the transmitter pocket inside the center console storage area, beneath the cupholder. You may need to pull out the cupholder to access this pocket. Place the new transmitter into this designated pocket.
  4. Press Ignition Button: Press the ignition button. Once the transmitter is successfully learned by the system, the DIC display will update to indicate readiness for programming the next transmitter, if applicable.
  5. Remove and Test: Remove the newly programmed transmitter from the transmitter pocket. Press the “unlock” button on the transmitter to test if programming was successful.

To program further transmitters, repeat steps 3 through 5. After all desired transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ignition button for approximately 5 seconds to exit the key fob programming mode.

2. Programming When No Working Transmitters Are Available

If you have lost all working key fobs for your 2005 Buick LaCrosse, or if you are starting from scratch with no programmed transmitters, you will need to follow this more time-intensive procedure. This process will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Ensure you have all the transmitters you wish to program with you and that the new key blades are cut. It is highly recommended to connect your vehicle to a power source, such as jumper cables connected to another running vehicle or a battery maintainer, to prevent battery drain during this extended procedure.

  1. Door Lock Key Cycle: Insert the new, unprogrammed key blade into the key lock cylinder on the outside of the driver’s door. Turn the key to the “unlock” position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display the message “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
  2. First 10-Minute Wait: Wait for a full ten minutes. After this period, the DIC display should change to “Press Engine Start Button To Learn.” Once this message appears, press the ignition button. The DIC display will revert to showing “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
  3. Repeat Wait Cycle Twice: Repeat step 2 two additional times. This means you will perform the 10-minute waiting period a total of three times. After the third waiting period, any previously programmed transmitters (if any existed but were not present) will be cleared from the vehicle’s memory. The DIC should now display “Ready For Remote #1.”
  4. Place New Transmitter in Pocket: Access the transmitter pocket located in the center console storage area under the cupholder (pull out the cupholder if needed). Place the new transmitter into the transmitter pocket.
  5. Press Ignition Button: Press the ignition button. When the transmitter is successfully programmed, the DIC display will indicate that the system is ready to program the next transmitter.
  6. Remove and Test: Remove the programmed transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press the “unlock” button to verify successful programming.

To program additional transmitters, repeat steps 4 through 6. Once you have programmed all desired transmitters, press and hold the ignition button for 5 seconds to exit the programming mode.

Important Note: Your 2005 Buick LaCrosse can have a maximum of five transmitters programmed to it. Keep this limit in mind when programming your key fobs.
