2007 CRV Key Fob Battery Replacement: A Quick and Easy Guide

Is your 2007 Honda CRV key fob not working as reliably as it used to? You might be facing a dead battery. Interestingly, even if you have a spare key fob that you rarely use, the battery can still drain over time. Don’t worry, replacing the battery in your 2007 CRV key fob is a straightforward process you can easily do yourself, saving you time and money compared to a dealership visit.

The battery you’ll need is a CR1616, a 3V lithium battery. While it might not be available at every corner store, you can typically find this specific battery at drugstores like Walgreens or online retailers. You might have less luck at big box building supply stores or general retailers like Walmart or CVS in-person. Prices can vary, but expect to pay around $5 per battery. Keep an eye out for brands like Energizer, and be aware that batteries can be made in different countries, such as Japan or Mexico. Shopping online could potentially offer cheaper options.

Replacing the battery itself is quite simple. You will need a mini-Phillips head screwdriver. First, locate the small screw on the back of your key fob. Using the screwdriver, carefully remove this screw. It might be a bit tight initially, possibly due to threadlocker used during assembly. Apply firm, steady pressure while turning to avoid stripping the screw head. Once the screw is out, the key fob casing will split open into two halves.

Inside, you’ll see a black plastic cassette containing the electronics and the battery. Gently pry this cassette open – it also splits into two halves. The CR1616 battery will be visible inside. Remove the old battery and replace it with the new one. When inserting the new battery, ensure the positive (+) side, which has the writing on it, faces down, so the writing is not visible once installed. It’s a good practice to use a cloth when pressing the battery into place to avoid touching the battery contact surfaces with your fingers.

After replacing the battery, reassemble the plastic cassette and then snap the two halves of the key fob casing back together. Finally, re-insert and tighten the small Phillips head screw. With the new CR1616 battery in place, your 2007 CRV key fob should be working perfectly again. This simple DIY task can save you a significant amount compared to the $15 or more that a dealership might charge for the same battery replacement service.
