1996 Toyota 4Runner Key Fob Programming: A Simple Guide

Is your 1996 Toyota 4Runner key fob not working, or did you get a replacement key fob and need to program it? This guide provides straightforward instructions on how to program your 1996 Toyota 4Runner key fob yourself. This procedure is specifically for vehicles equipped with the RS3000 security system, often referred to as the “dealer-installed” system.

Before you begin, it’s crucial to verify that your 1996 Toyota 4Runner is indeed equipped with the RS3000 security system. This programming method is exclusively for the RS3000 system and will not work with other security systems.

Identifying the RS3000 Security System in Your 1996 4Runner

The most reliable way to confirm if your vehicle has the RS3000 system is to check for the security light on your dashboard. This light, as pictured below, is a key indicator of the RS3000 system’s presence.

Another important point to note is the type of key fob you are using. For the RS3000 system, you must use a black remote with a black remote. These remotes are not interchangeable with remotes of other colors or systems. Using the wrong type of remote will prevent successful programming.

If you’re still unsure, you can also try to locate the RS3000 ECU (Electronic Control Unit) computer in your 4Runner. While it might be hidden, knowing where to look can help confirm its presence. The ECU is typically found behind the driver’s side kick panel under the dash, under the seats, or even in the trunk. You might need to remove the plastic panel of the kick plate to get a clear view. It may be under the carpet, but you should be able to see its outline.

Once you have confirmed that your 1996 Toyota 4Runner has the RS3000 system and you have the correct black remote, you can proceed with the programming steps.

Programming a New Key Fob to Your 1996 Toyota 4Runner RS3000 System

Follow these steps to add a new key fob to your existing RS3000 system:

  1. Locate the RS3000 ECU Computer: As mentioned earlier, find the RS3000 ECU. It’s commonly located behind the driver’s side kick panel, under the seats, or in the trunk.

  2. Turn Ignition ON: Insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it to the “ON” position. Do not start the engine, just turn the key to the position right before starting the car.

  3. Push and Hold the Programming Button: Locate the programming button on the RS3000 ECU (refer to the picture above for its general location on the ECU). Push and HOLD this button for 3 seconds. After 3 seconds, the security light on your dashboard should turn on and remain lit for 5 seconds.

  4. Press and Release Remote Button: Within those 5 seconds while the security light is on, take the first remote you wish to program and PRESS and RELEASE the top button on the remote. Upon successful programming, the security light will turn off, you will hear a chirp sound, and the exterior lights of your 4Runner will flash once.

  5. Turn Ignition OFF: Switch the ignition key back to the “OFF” position. Programming for this remote is now complete.

If you have additional remotes you want to program, repeat step 4 for each remote, up to a maximum of 4 remotes for the RS3000 system.

Erasing All Key Fobs from Your 1996 Toyota 4Runner RS3000 System

If you need to erase all previously programmed key fobs from your system, for example, if you are concerned about security, follow these steps:

  1. Turn Ignition ON: Insert the key into the ignition and switch it to the “ON” position, just as in the programming procedure.

  2. Push and Hold Programming Button (3 seconds): Push and HOLD the programming button on the RS3000 ECU for 3 seconds. The security light will turn on for 5 seconds.

  3. Release, then Push and Hold Again (2 seconds): RELEASE the programming button, and then immediately PUSH and HOLD it again for another 2 seconds. If successful, the security light will turn off, you will hear a chirp, and the exterior lights will flash 3 times. This indicates that all previously programmed remotes have been erased from the system’s memory.

  4. Turn Ignition OFF: Switch the ignition to the “OFF” position. The erasure process is now complete. None of your previously programmed remotes will function with the RS3000 system until they are reprogrammed using the “Programming a New Key Fob” procedure.

If you encounter any difficulties programming your 1996 Toyota 4Runner key fob, or if you prefer professional assistance, consider searching for a qualified key fob installer in your local area. They can provide expert programming services and ensure your key fobs are correctly set up for your vehicle.
