GT500 Key Fob Upgrade: Flip Key Programming and Emblem Insights

Upgrading the key fob for your car can feel like a small but significant improvement. Recently, I decided to enhance my 2008 GT500 with a flip key fob, and the process turned out to be a worthwhile upgrade. Programming the new key was straightforward, thankfully avoiding a trip to the dealership.

The key to programming a new fob at home is having both of your original keys. With the original keys, you can put your car into programming mode and follow the instructions that come with the aftermarket key. These instructions are usually provided by the seller, sometimes even sent separately via email after purchase. Following these steps, I successfully programmed my new flip key, which has been a fantastic improvement over the standard key.

One of the aesthetic touches I wanted to add was a Shelby emblem to the new fob. Finding small Shelby emblems proved to be a bit of a treasure hunt. I eventually located some listed on eBay as fob emblems, around 13mm in size. They were sold in sets of four, and initially, I only purchased two. Realizing their rarity, I quickly went back and bought the remaining two. These emblems seemed unique; I hadn’t encountered them before, and knowing that they can be easily damaged if the fob is taken apart, having spares seemed prudent. Since that initial purchase, I’ve searched extensively online for vendors selling these emblems but haven’t had any luck. Interestingly, the emblems I found originated from Serbia.

Initially, I thought replacing the battery in the fob would require removing the Shelby emblem and unscrewing a small Phillips head screw underneath to separate the fob halves. However, I later discovered that battery replacement is much simpler. The battery can be replaced without needing to remove the emblem or disassemble the fob. This makes routine maintenance like battery changes much more convenient.

In conclusion, upgrading to a flip key fob for a GT500 is a user-friendly modification, especially when you can program it yourself. And if you’re looking to personalize it with a Shelby emblem, keep an eye out for those rare finds, as they can add a unique touch to your key.
