How to Program Your Remote Start Key Fob

Are you looking to program your remote start key fob? Whether you’re adding a new remote or need to reprogram your existing one, this guide will walk you through the process, specifically focusing on Ford factory remote start systems. Remote start key fobs are programmed through the remote start unit itself, not directly through your vehicle’s computer in the same way as standard key fobs. This procedure should be applicable to most Ford factory remote start systems.

Adding Remote Controls to Your System

Your Ford remote start system can operate with up to eight remote controls. Here’s how to add a new remote to your system:

  1. Ensure your vehicle’s security system is disarmed and the ignition is turned off.
  2. Open the driver’s side door.
  3. Turn the vehicle ignition to the “on” position.
  4. Locate and press the programming/override button, usually found under the instrument panel. Press and hold this button.
  5. Continue holding the programming/override button for approximately 15 seconds. After this time, the vehicle’s horn will chirp three times. This indicates that the system has successfully entered remote control programming mode.
  6. Release the programming/override button.
  7. Press any button on the remote control you wish to program. Upon pressing a button, the horn or siren will sound once, confirming that the system has successfully “learned” the new remote control.
  8. If you have additional remote controls to program, repeat step 7 for each new remote.
  9. Turn the vehicle ignition off to exit the programming mode.
  10. Test all programmed remote controls to ensure they are functioning correctly with your remote start system.

Deleting and Reprogramming Remote Controls

If you need to delete lost or stolen remote controls, or if you’re starting fresh, you can clear the system’s memory and reprogram your remotes. Here’s how:

Lost or stolen remote controls can be deleted in two ways:

  1. Reprogramming all remotes: By following the “Adding Remote Controls” procedure above and reprogramming all desired remotes, any remotes not reprogrammed will be effectively deleted. The system will only recognize the remotes programmed during the procedure, up to the eight remote limit.
  2. Using the door unlock switch (if applicable): If your vehicle is equipped with factory-installed Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), you can erase all learned transmitters by pressing the vehicle’s door-mounted “unlock” switch while the PowerCode system is in transmitter learn mode (during step 5 of the “Adding Remote Controls” procedure). After erasing transmitters this way, all desired remote transmitters will need to be reprogrammed to the PowerCode system using the “Adding Remote Controls” procedure.

After deleting remotes, you will need to reprogram all the remote controls you intend to use with your vehicle’s remote start system by following the “Adding Remote Controls to Your System” procedure.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you encounter issues during the programming process, consider these troubleshooting steps:

  • Check the Remote Battery: Ensure the battery in your new remote is new and properly installed. A dead or weak battery is a common cause of programming failure.
  • Remote Compatibility: Verify that the back cover or the remote itself is compatible with your specific remote start system. Swapping components between different remotes might lead to incompatibility.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully program your remote start key fob. Always test your remotes after programming to ensure proper functionality.
