Changing the key fob battery in your 2004-2009 Toyota Prius is a straightforward task you can easily do yourself. Like any battery, the one in your Prius key fob will eventually need replacing. You’ll know it’s time when your car beeps after you turn it off, the remote range decreases significantly, or the key fob becomes unresponsive altogether. You might also notice a flashing security “key” icon on your dashboard. Since the Prius relies on electronic key detection rather than a traditional mechanical key to start, a functional key fob battery is essential. Original batteries in these fobs are often Panasonic, and typically last for 3-5 years, which is a reasonable lifespan.
Tools Needed:
- Precision Philips head screwdriver (#0 is ideal)
- Small flat-head screwdriver or a sturdy paperclip
Parts/Supplies Needed:
- One CR2032 battery
- Remove the Emergency Key: Begin by releasing the emergency key. With the key fob buttons facing upwards, locate the small spring-loaded release. Slide this release to the left (typically marked in red) and simultaneously pull the emergency key upwards and out of the fob. This key is a standard mechanical key that can be used in emergencies.
- Open the Key Fob Casing: Next, you need to open the key fob to access the battery compartment. Turn the fob over so the buttons are facing downwards. Locate the spring-loaded cover release, similar to the key release. Slide this release to the right (again, often marked in red). While holding the release, push the back panel of the fob upwards. It should slide off relatively easily. If you encounter resistance, try using a rubber glove to improve your grip on the fob for better leverage.
- Access the Battery: With the back cover removed, you will see the internal components and the battery cover plate. Use a Philips #0 screwdriver to remove the four small screws that secure this plate. Once the screws are removed, use a paperclip or a thin flat-head screwdriver to gently pry up the battery cover plate. The designated prying point is usually indicated by a small notch or arrow on the side of the plate.
-
Replace the CR2032 Battery: Now you can access the old CR2032 battery. Carefully remove the old battery and replace it with a new CR2032 battery. Ensure that the positive (+) side of the new battery is facing upwards, towards the cover panel, when you install it.
-
Reassemble the Key Fob: Reassembly is simply the reverse of the disassembly process. Place the battery cover plate back into position and secure it with the four Philips head screws. Slide the back panel of the key fob back into place until it clicks securely. Finally, slide the emergency key back into the key fob until it locks.
By following these steps, you’ve successfully replaced the battery in your 2004 Toyota Prius key fob. Your key fob should now function correctly, restoring its range and responsiveness.
