Spring is often a whirlwind of activities, and finding time for hobbies like sewing can be challenging. If you’re looking for a satisfyingly quick project, this cork Monogram Key Fob is the perfect answer.
This charming little accessory is a delightful addition to any bag or keychain. Crafted from cork fabric, it’s not only stylish but also incredibly easy to sew. The beauty of cork fabric lies in its no-fray nature, eliminating the need to deal with raw edges. I whipped one up in just about 15 minutes! Consider making one for yourself, and perhaps a few more as thoughtful, speedy gifts for friends.
The secret to this monogram key fob’s polished look and feel is the stiff interfacing nestled between the cork layers. This adds body and a touch of weight, allowing it to hang gracefully. A swivel hook completes the design, making it effortless to attach to your keys or bag handle.
I’m providing a free pattern that includes all letters of the alphabet, plus a heart shape, inspired by my trend-conscious 14-year-old daughter’s request. Her suggestion was a clear indication that a heart key fob needed to be part of the pattern options!
Materials You’ll Need:
- Cork fabric
- Pellon® 72F Peltex® Two-Sided Fusible Ultra Firm Stabilizer
- Swivel hook
- 2 ½” twill tape (matching the swivel hook ring width)
- Free Monogram Pattern
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Cut two monogram letters from your chosen cork fabric. Ensure one is right side up and the other is wrong side up. From the Peltex, cut one inner letter piece using the dashed line on the pattern.
- Thread the twill tape through the swivel hook ring. Fold the tape back on itself, aligning the raw edges.
- Stitch the twill tape to the Peltex monogram piece. Position it at your desired angle and location for the swivel hook attachment on the key fob. Leave approximately ¾” of space between the swivel hook ring and the Peltex edge.
-
Create a sandwich by placing the Peltex monogram between the two cork monograms, ensuring the right sides of the cork are facing outwards.
-
Fuse the layers together using an iron set to a low temperature. Always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the cork fabric to protect it from melting. The goal here is just a temporary bond to hold the pieces together for sewing, not a permanent fuse.
-
Stitch around the entire perimeter of your monogram using a 1/8” seam allowance.
You’re Done! Attach your personalized monogram key fob to your keychain or bag and enjoy!
