Buick Envision Key Fob Not Working? Troubleshoot and Fix

Experiencing issues with your Buick Envision key fob? It can be frustrating when your key fob suddenly stops working, leaving you unable to lock, unlock, or even start your vehicle remotely. Many Buick Envision owners encounter key fob problems at some point, and often the fix is simpler than you might think. Let’s explore common reasons why your Buick Envision key fob might not be working and how to troubleshoot these issues.

One of the most frequent culprits behind a non-responsive key fob is a low or dead battery. Like any battery-powered device, your key fob’s battery will eventually need replacing. If you’ve been using your Buick Envision for a few years and haven’t changed the key fob battery, this is the first and easiest thing to check. Buick Envisions typically use a CR2032 button cell battery, which is readily available at most drugstores, supermarkets, and auto parts stores.

Steps to Reprogram Your Buick Envision Key Fob

If replacing the battery doesn’t solve the problem, or if you’ve just replaced the battery and the key fob still isn’t working, you may need to reprogram your key fob to your Buick Envision. Here are the steps based on the Buick owner’s manual for reprogramming your key fob:

  1. Locate the Transmitter Pocket: Open your center console cupholder and remove the rubber liner. This will reveal the transmitter pocket at the bottom of the cupholder.

  2. Prepare for Programming: Insert your vehicle key (the physical key that came with your key fob) into the driver’s side door lock cylinder. Turn the key counterclockwise five times within 10 seconds to the unlock position. The Driver Information Center (DIC) should display “READY FOR REMOTE #2, 3, 4 or 5” (or a similar message indicating it’s ready for remote programming).

  3. Place Key Fob in Pocket: Place the new key fob into the transmitter pocket, ensuring the buttons are facing upwards.

  4. Program the Key Fob: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button in your Buick Envision. Once the key fob is successfully programmed, the DIC will indicate it’s ready for the next remote to be programmed.

  5. Verify Programming: Remove the key fob from the transmitter pocket and press any button to test if it’s working. To program additional key fobs, repeat steps 3-5.

  6. Exit Programming Mode: After programming all desired key fobs, press and hold the ignition button for approximately 12 seconds to exit the programming mode. Reinstall the rubber cup liner in your cupholder.

Still Not Working? Other Potential Issues

If you’ve tried both replacing the battery and reprogramming your key fob, and it’s still not functioning, there might be other underlying issues. These could include:

  • Signal Interference: Strong radio frequencies or electronic interference in your area can sometimes temporarily block the key fob signal. Try moving to a different location and testing the key fob again.
  • Receiver Problems: The receiver in your Buick Envision that picks up the signal from the key fob could be faulty. This is less common but possible.
  • Key Fob Damage: If your key fob has been dropped, gotten wet, or otherwise damaged, internal components might be broken.

If you continue to experience problems with your Buick Envision key fob after trying these troubleshooting steps, it’s recommended to consult with a certified Buick dealer or a qualified automotive locksmith. They have specialized tools and diagnostic equipment to further diagnose and resolve more complex key fob issues.
