1997 Lexus ES300 Key Fob Programming: Seeking Expert Advice

I’m reaching out to the community for assistance with programming a key fob for my 1997 Lexus ES300. Despite searching through online threads, I haven’t found a solution that works for my specific situation. I’m hoping to get some clarity and guidance here.

My original key fob is partially functional; the unlock and trunk buttons have stopped working. Consequently, I purchased a new key fob online (Keyless Entry Remote Fob Compatible with Lexus 1995 1996 1997 4B FCC ID HYQWDT-C 1) to resolve this issue.

I’ve diligently followed various programming instructions available, but I’m encountering a roadblock at step #8. The instructions state that “Locks should cycle once (Car will lock and then unlock once).” However, when I turn the key to the “on” position twice as instructed, the locks cycle twice instead of once. This seems to indicate that the system recognizes two keys already.

This leads to my first question: Does the double lock cycle mean there are already two key fobs programmed to my 1997 Lexus ES300, or is the system also counting the physical ignition key itself as one of the programmed keys? It’s worth noting I only received one key fob when I purchased the car.

Furthermore, one set of instructions mentioned that turning the key to the “on” position three times would deactivate all currently programmed keys. This brings up another question: If I deactivate all programmed keys using this method, will I then be able to successfully program my new key fob? And importantly, if the programming process fails after deactivation, will I still be able to manually open the door with my physical key and start the car? I need to ensure I don’t inadvertently lose the ability to use my car altogether in the process of trying to program this new fob.

Any expert advice or insights into these questions, particularly regarding the 1997 Lexus Es300 Key Fob Programming process and the meaning of the lock cycles, would be greatly appreciated.
