2009 Ford Escape Key Fob Battery Replacement and Programming Guide

Replacing the battery in your 2009 Ford Escape key fob is a straightforward process that can often resolve issues with remote functionality. If your key fob isn’t unlocking your doors from a distance or seems unresponsive, a dead battery is the most likely culprit. This guide will walk you through replacing your 2009 Ford Escape Key Fob Battery and, if necessary, provide instructions on how to reprogram your key fob.

Before assuming you need to reprogram your key fob, changing the battery is a simple and cost-effective first step. The 2009 Ford Escape key fob typically uses a CR2032 battery, a common and readily available coin cell battery. You can purchase these batteries at most drugstores, supermarkets, and online retailers.

To replace the battery in your 2009 Ford Escape key fob, you will need a small flathead screwdriver. Gently insert the screwdriver into the small slot on the side of your key fob. Twisting the screwdriver carefully will pop the key fob casing open. Once open, you will see the battery compartment. Take note of the battery orientation (+ side up) before removing the old battery. Install the new CR2032 battery, ensuring the correct orientation. Snap the key fob casing back together until it clicks securely.

After replacing the battery, test your key fob. In most cases, replacing the battery will restore the functionality of your remote. However, if you continue to experience issues, or if you have replaced your key fob or added a new one, you may need to reprogram it to your 2009 Ford Escape.

There are two types of key fobs for the 2009 Ford Escape: a remote only fob and a remote key combo. The programming procedures differ slightly for each.

Programming Instructions for Remote Only Key Fob

This procedure is for programming the remote functions (lock, unlock, panic) of a standalone key fob remote.

  1. Ensure you have all remote transmitters for your vehicle.
  2. Turn your ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, ending on RUN. “OFF” is the position where you can remove your key; “RUN” is the position just before starting the engine. The door locks will cycle to confirm entry into programming mode.
  3. Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote to be programmed. The door locks will cycle again, confirming programming.
  4. If programming multiple remotes, repeat step 3 within 20 seconds for each additional remote.
  5. Turn the ignition to OFF. The locks will cycle one last time to indicate the end of programming mode.

Programming Instructions for Remote Key Combo (Transponder Chip)

This procedure is for programming the transponder chip within a remote key combo, which is necessary for starting your vehicle. You must have two previously programmed, original Ford keys to perform this procedure.

  1. Insert your first previously programmed, working Ford key into the ignition.
  2. Turn the ignition from the LOCK position to the RUN position. Keep it in the RUN position for at least 3 seconds, but no longer than 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition back to the LOCK position and remove the first key.
  4. Within 10 seconds, insert your second previously programmed, working Ford key into the ignition.
  5. Turn the ignition from LOCK to RUN again. Hold in RUN for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
  6. Turn the ignition to LOCK and remove the second key.
  7. Within 20 seconds, insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition.
  8. Turn the ignition from LOCK to RUN. Keep it in RUN for at least 6 seconds.
  9. Remove the newly programmed key from the ignition.

If the new key does not program successfully, repeat steps 1-9. If only the remote portion of a remote head key fails to program, but the key starts the vehicle, use the “Remote Only Key Fob Programming” procedure above to program the remote functions.

By following these steps, you should be able to replace your 2009 Ford Escape key fob battery and reprogram your key fob if needed, ensuring you maintain convenient and reliable access to your vehicle.
