2009 Touareg DEF System Issues and No-Restart Countdown

I’m encountering a frustrating issue with my 2009 Touareg. For a couple of years, I’ve had persistent glow plug fault codes, but the DEF system seemed to be functioning correctly. Recently, after refilling the AdBlue, the warning light wouldn’t clear, and now I’m facing a “no restart” countdown. Currently, it’s at 250 miles to no-restart and decreasing after each short trip. I’m concerned about what will happen when it reaches zero. Is there a way to use VCDS to restart the vehicle and avoid it becoming unusable?

Previously, when the AdBlue warning light issue first arose, I took it to a local repair shop. They suspected a DEF tank assembly problem and replaced it. However, the warning light persisted even after the replacement. They admitted their diagnostic tool couldn’t properly communicate with the system to reset it and suggested it might require a specialized tool. They were honest enough not to charge me for the part and labor, leaving the new DEF tank assembly installed. Following this, I invested in a VCDS tool myself. After using VCDS, I managed to reset the warning. However, the system now indicates an intermittent wiring fault related to the DEF tank. I’m unsure if this wiring issue was present before the DEF tank replacement or if it’s a new problem. I know the glow plug faults predate all of this, as they were detected by a standard scan tool previously. Could the new DEF tank assembly be faulty, or is it more likely a pinched wire or harness issue?

I’m hesitant to take it to the dealership due to concerns about an unwanted recall service. I’ve heard discussions suggesting that newer DEF parts might require a software update, but I’m unsure if this is accurate or applies to my situation and specific parts. Could this potential software incompatibility be the reason for the issue with the replacement DEF assembly? Is there a way to identify if there are different part numbers for older and newer DEF tank assemblies for the 2009 Touareg?

Any guidance on diagnosing these 2009 Touareg DEF system and no-restart issues would be greatly appreciated.
