During the replacement, I did notice that the D-rings on two of the old coils were brittle, indicating heat stress and age. This reinforced my decision to replace them and is something other 2015 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn owners might want to inspect. I even took the GTI for a celebratory 25-minute test drive after the install. The car ran beautifully, power delivery felt smooth, and I was genuinely enjoying the drive. However, my good mood was short-lived. As I turned onto my street, the dreaded ECP light illuminated, and the engine stalled. A promising afternoon of car maintenance ended in disappointment and a new mystery.
The next day, I hooked up my VCDS to pull the fault codes, hoping to pinpoint the issue. To my surprise, the new codes pointed towards fuel delivery problems. This was unexpected, especially after just replacing the ignition components. It made me question if the spark plugs and coils were even necessary in the first place, although given the condition of the old coil D-rings, they likely needed replacing soon anyway.
The fault codes suggest potential issues with the fuel system. I know there was a fuel pump recall for this generation of GTI sometime in the past, and I suspect there might be another active recall or perhaps the previous repair is now failing. Alternatively, the problem could lie with the fuel injectors.
