Experiencing persistent ABS and ESP warning lights on your 4motion Jetta after a repair can be frustrating. We recently tackled a similar issue here at keyfobprog.com and wanted to share the troubleshooting process, hoping it might shed light for others facing comparable challenges.
Our journey began with a 4motion Jetta exhibiting an ESP sensor unit defective fault code. The initial step involved replacing the ESP module. Encouragingly, this resolved the original fault code, a definite step in the right direction. As our mechanic reported, “We are no longer throwing the ESP sensor unit defective fault code. So that is good.”
However, the relief was short-lived. Despite clearing the initial ESP fault, the dashboard still displayed ABS lights, accompanied by a flashing brake light. Furthermore, a new diagnostic scan using VCDS revealed a persistent error: “ABS module incorrectly coded.” This indicated that while the new ESP module was communicating and functioning to some extent, its configuration wasn’t quite right for the vehicle’s system. The VCDS log provided further insight into the situation:

Specifically, within the ABS Brakes section (Address 03), the fault codes are:
- 01044 – Control Module Incorrectly Coded 000 – –
- 01324 – Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492) 004 – No Signal/Communication
The coding value currently in place is “0023049.” This coding was confidently applied based on recommendations from experienced community members familiar with 4motion Jetta and similar VW models. The logic and calculations behind this coding were even explained and seemed sound.
Despite this seemingly correct coding, the persistent “Incorrectly Coded” error suggests a deeper issue. It’s possible that while the coding value itself might be valid, there could be a mismatch between the new ESP module and the specific requirements of this 4motion Jetta’s ABS system. Another fault code, “01324 – Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492) 004 – No Signal/Communication,” further complicates the diagnosis, indicating a potential communication breakdown with the all-wheel-drive system, which is crucial for 4motion functionality.
Moving forward, further investigation is needed to pinpoint the root cause. Could the new ESP module be incompatible despite being intended for a MK60 ESP/ABS system? Is there a more specific coding value required for this particular 4motion Jetta configuration? Or does the “Incorrectly Coded” error point to a different underlying problem altogether, perhaps related to the all-wheel-drive communication issue?
We are currently exploring these possibilities and welcome any insights or suggestions from the community. Troubleshooting these intricate electronic systems on modern vehicles like the 4motion Jetta often requires collaborative knowledge sharing, and we are eager to learn from others’ experiences to resolve this coding challenge. Stay tuned for updates as we delve deeper into diagnosing this “Incorrectly Coded” error and strive to restore full functionality to the ABS and ESP systems of this 4motion Jetta.
