Audi A4 Oil Consumption: Is Your Engine Burning Too Much Oil?

It’s a concerning moment for any car owner when you realize your vehicle is consuming more oil than it should. For Audi A4 owners, particularly those with the 2.0T engine, high oil consumption can be a worrying issue. One owner experienced this firsthand and took action, sharing their experience online to help others understand what might be considered excessive oil consumption and what steps can be taken.

This owner initially noticed their Audi A4 2.0T was using oil at a rate of 0.2-0.3 liters per 1000km from new until its first service at around 26,000km. While already a point of concern for them, the problem escalated after the first service, jumping to approximately 0.5 liters per 1000km or even higher. This increase was unexplained and clearly deviated from normal expectations.

To get to the bottom of this, the owner meticulously tracked their oil consumption, documenting every top-up and mileage. Armed with this data, they approached their Audi dealer. The dealer, acknowledging the concern, initiated a 1000km test drive to verify the oil consumption rate. The test confirmed the owner’s findings: 0.5 liters of oil consumed per 1000km. Based on this result, the dealer made a significant decision – they would replace the entire engine under warranty.

The engine replacement occurred when the car was 23 months old with about 48,000km on the clock. The auxiliary components, such as the turbocharger, were transferred from the old engine to the new one. Since the engine replacement in June of that year, the owner has driven an additional 8,000km with the new engine. While some oil consumption persists, indicated by the oil level display showing about 1/3 down, the owner expresses satisfaction with the improvement, describing the current consumption as “more reasonable.”

Interestingly, the owner also mentions a friend with an Audi A4 2.0T purchased around the same time who experienced even higher oil consumption and also had their engine replaced. Both owners, facing identical issues, ended up at the same dealer on the same day for engine replacements, highlighting a potentially wider issue with this engine type.

According to the dealer, these 2.0T engines were known to have a problem leading to high oil consumption. The dealer even mentioned the impending release of a “repair kit” designed to address this issue. However, at the time of this owner’s engine replacement, the repair kit was not yet officially available, leading to the decision to replace the entire engine instead. Details about the nature of this repair kit remain undisclosed by the dealer.

This real-world experience underscores that while some oil consumption is normal in engines, excessive consumption in Audi A4 2.0T models can be a sign of a problem that warrants investigation. If you are experiencing high oil consumption in your Audi A4, documenting your oil usage and consulting with your Audi dealer is a crucial first step. Warranty coverage and potential solutions like engine replacement or future repair kits may be available to address this issue.
