How to Reset Your Nissan Key Fob After Changing Battery

Changing the battery in your Nissan key fob is a straightforward task, but sometimes it can lead to your key fob losing its connection with your vehicle. If you find yourself unable to lock, unlock, or start your Nissan after a battery replacement, you likely need to reset or reprogram your key fob. Fortunately, this process can often be done easily at home without needing to visit a dealership. This guide will walk you through proven methods to reset your Nissan key fob and get you back on the road quickly.

Method 1: Simple Key Fob Reset Procedure

This first method is a quick and easy attempt to re-establish the connection between your Nissan and its key fob. It’s often the first recommended step and works for many Nissan models.

  1. Get into your Nissan and close all doors. Ensure all doors, including the trunk or hatchback, are fully closed.

  2. Turn the ignition off. Make sure your car’s ignition is completely off and the key is not in the ignition.

  3. Press and hold the Lock and Unlock buttons simultaneously. Locate the lock and unlock buttons on your Nissan key fob. Press and hold both buttons down at the same time for approximately 15 seconds.

  5. Press the Unlock button once. Immediately after pressing the lock button, press the Unlock button on your key fob one time and release it.

  6. Turn the ignition on. Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to the “on” position. Do not start the engine, just turn the ignition to the point where the dashboard lights up.

  7. Test your key fob. Try using the lock and unlock buttons on your key fob to see if they are now working correctly with your Nissan.

If this simple method doesn’t work, proceed to the next more comprehensive procedure.

Method 2: Nissan Key Fob Reprogramming with Ignition Cycling

This method involves a sequence of ignition cycles and button presses to reprogram your Nissan key fob. It’s slightly more involved but often effective when the simpler method fails.

  1. Sit in the driver’s seat with all doors closed. Make sure you are inside your Nissan with all doors and the trunk securely closed.

  2. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the “on” position. Turn the key to the “on” position, where the dashboard lights are illuminated, but do not start the engine.

  3. Press and hold the Lock button on the key fob for one second. Locate the Lock button on your key fob. Press and hold it down for approximately one second.

  4. Turn the ignition to the “off” position. Turn the ignition key back to the “off” position. Do not remove the key from the ignition.

  5. Repeat steps 2-4 three more times. Continue cycling the ignition from “on” to “off” while pressing the Lock button for one second each time, for a total of four cycles. Do not remove the key from the ignition during these cycles.

  6. Listen for the door locks to cycle. On the fourth “on” cycle, you should hear the door locks cycle (making a clicking or whirring sound). This indicates that the system has entered programming mode.

  7. Remove the key from the ignition. Once you hear the door locks cycle, remove the key from the ignition.

  8. Test the key fob. Step out of your Nissan, close the door, and test the lock and unlock buttons on your key fob to verify if it’s now working correctly.

If your key fob still doesn’t work after trying both methods, there might be another issue. It’s recommended to double-check that the new battery is correctly installed and is the right type for your key fob. If problems persist, consulting your Nissan owner’s manual or contacting a certified Nissan technician for assistance might be necessary.
