How to Open a Key Fob: A Simple Guide for Car Owners

Have you ever needed to replace your car key fob battery but weren’t sure how to get inside? Many people assume opening a key fob is complicated, but it’s usually a straightforward process you can do yourself. This guide from the experts at keyfobprog.com will show you just how easy it is to open your key fob and access the battery compartment. You might be surprised at how quickly you can get your key fob working again with a fresh battery!

Removing the Hidden Key

The first step to opening most key fobs is to remove the mechanical key. Often, this key is hidden within the fob itself and is designed to be detached. Look closely at your key fob for a section that appears to be a different color or texture than the main body. This is usually the removable key.

To release the key, locate a small release button or latch on the fob. Press or slide this button, and the mechanical key should slide out. In the example below, you can see the silver portion of this Dodge key fob is the detachable key.

Once you’ve removed the mechanical key, you’ll often see the next access point for opening the key fob casing. This might be a small slot or seam revealed after the key is removed.

This image shows the key removed, revealing a small opening that will help you pry apart the fob.

Prying Open the Key Fob Casing

With the mechanical key removed, the next step is to carefully separate the two halves of the key fob casing. Key fobs are designed to be securely closed, so the latches holding them together can be quite tight. To open it, you’ll need a small, flat tool. A small screwdriver or even a thin, sturdy plastic tool will work.

Insert the edge of your tool into the seam or slot you located in the previous step. Gently apply pressure to pry the two halves of the fob apart. Work your tool around the seam, carefully lifting until the casing begins to separate.

Be patient and avoid using excessive force, especially the first time you open the fob, as the casing can be quite stiff. Work slowly around the fob until it comes apart into two pieces – a front and a back cover.

Accessing and Replacing the Battery

Once the key fob is open, you will see the battery. Before removing the old battery, take a moment to note how it is positioned in the compartment. Pay attention to which side is facing up (positive or negative). This is important to ensure you install the new battery correctly.

Key fob batteries can vary depending on the car model and year, but they are often small, button-cell batteries. Make sure you have the correct replacement battery on hand before you begin.

Carefully remove the old battery and install the new one, ensuring the positive and negative sides are oriented correctly, just like the old battery.

Reassembling Your Key Fob

The final step is to put the key fob back together. Align the two halves of the casing and press them firmly together. You should hear a clicking sound as the latches re-engage, indicating that the fob is securely closed.

Once reassembled, test your key fob to make sure it is working properly. Press the lock and unlock buttons to confirm that your car responds. Finally, slide the mechanical key back into the fob.
