Washington, D.C. – Consumers are being urged to immediately stop using certain portable bed rails sold by Medical King under the brand name Medical King Bed Assist Rail. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall in conjunction with Home 4U, Inc., dba. Medical King, due to serious safety risks associated with these products. Specifically, these Portable Rails present a significant entrapment and asphyxia hazard, as users can become trapped within the rail itself or between the rail and their mattress.
The recall affects three distinct models of Medical King Bed Assist Rails marketed as adult portable bed rails. Tragically, Medical King has already received a report of a fatality linked to the Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights, model number 7007. In November 2023, a 66-year-old man residing in a South Carolina care facility died after becoming entrapped between his mattress and this portable rail.
The scope of this recall includes the following Medical King Bed Assist Rail models:
- Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights (model numbers 7007 and 7057): Characterized by black or white metal tubing, these models feature a rounded black foam rubber grip handle and incorporate a fabric pouch for storage.
- Bed Assist Rail Without Legs (model number 7037): Constructed from silver metal tubing, this model also includes a black foam rubber grip handle and a black fabric pouch.
It is important to note that the recalled portable rails do not bear any model numbers or brand-specific labels directly on the product itself. This makes visual identification crucial for consumers.
Medical King distributed approximately 222,000 units of these recalled portable rails between January 2020 and March 2024. These were sold for around $40 each through various online retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target Plus, eBay, Kohls.com, and directly via medicalkingusa.com. The manufacturing origin of these portable rails is China.
Consumers who have purchased any of these Medical King portable bed rails are advised to cease using them immediately. Medical King is offering remedies to address this safety concern. Depending on the specific model owned, consumers are eligible to receive either a free repair kit or a replacement bed rail.
The CPSC strongly encourages consumers to report any incidents or safety concerns related to these or other portable rail products to the agency directly. Reports can be submitted through www.SaferProducts.gov. This reporting platform serves as a vital resource for monitoring product safety and protecting consumers from harm.
