The History of Ross Technical Institutes
Ross Education’s journey began in 1969 with J.M. Ross establishing Learning Foundations in Flint, Michigan. Initially focused on after-school academic support for K-12 students, six more schools opened by 1971.
In 1971, Ross Learning, Inc. emerged, shifting focus to vocational training for adults. Purchased by Howard J. Hulsman in 1973, the organization evolved into career training centers. 1976 marked the launch of Ross Medical Education Centers, providing comprehensive instructional services. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ross Learning, Inc. expanded across the Midwest and Southern US, operating as Ross Medical Education Center, Ross Business Institute, or Ross Technical Institute, solidifying its presence in ross technical and vocational training.
In 2004, ownership transitioned to Christine Ossenmacher, Paul Mitchell, and Richard Lockman. In 2005, Paul Mitchell, Huron Capital Partners, LLC, and minority investors formed Ross Education, LLC, acquiring Ross Learning, Inc.’s assets. The Institute of Medical and Dental Technology in Cincinnati, Ohio, was acquired on May 1, 2008. June 1, 2012, saw the official name change to Ross Medical Education Center. Between 2008 and 2010, Ross Education, LLC upgraded facilities to larger, modern spaces. In 2011, the Sylvania, Ohio location became Ross College, and Ross College Online was established for Associate Degree programs, further expanding ross technical education offerings.
Early 2017, Ross acquired three former Brown Mackie College campuses in Hopkinsville, KY, North Canton, OH, and Quad Cities, IA (Bettendorf), officially renamed Ross College on February 1, 2017. These additions brought new programs like Nursing, Practical Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Veterinary Technology, and Business Management, enhancing the scope of ross technical and professional training at Ross.
Today, Ross provides Medical Assistant training across Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Select campuses offer Dental Assistant and Veterinary Assistant programs. All Ross Medical Education Center and Ross College campuses hold accreditation from the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, ensuring quality ross technical education standards.
Ross Medical Education Center and Ross College are governed by Ross Education Holdings, Inc., located in Clinton Township, MI. A corporate restructuring on February 1, 2021, transitioned Ross Education Holdings, LLC to a Michigan nonstock nonprofit corporation, Ross Education Holdings, Inc., classified as a public charity under IRC Section 501(c)(3). The U.S. Department of Education is reviewing whether this change will classify Ross Medical Education Center/Ross College as a nonprofit institution for Title IV federal student aid program participation, maintaining accessibility to ross technical education.
