Changing Battery in GMC Acadia Key Fob: A Quick Guide

It’s a familiar frustration for many GMC Acadia owners: you reach for your key fob, press a button, and… nothing happens. While there could be several reasons why your key fob isn’t working, the most common culprit is a dead battery. Fortunately, changing the battery in your GMC Acadia key fob is a straightforward task you can easily handle yourself, saving you a trip to the dealership. Most GMC Acadia key fobs are powered by a 3-volt CR2032 battery, known for its longevity, typically lasting between three to four years. When it’s time for a replacement, you’ll find it’s an inexpensive fix requiring minimal effort.

To replace the battery in your GMC Acadia key fob, you’ll only need a couple of simple tools. First, you’ll need a small flathead screwdriver. This will be used to gently pry open the key fob casing. Secondly, and most importantly, you’ll need a new CR2032 battery. These batteries are widely available and can be purchased at most drug stores, hardware stores, and even grocery stores. Buying them in multi-packs can be a cost-effective way to have spares on hand for the future.

Once you have your tools and replacement battery ready, you can proceed with the battery replacement. The process begins with carefully opening the key fob. Locate the small notch on the back of your GMC Acadia key fob. Using your flathead screwdriver, gently insert the tip into this notch. Apply a small amount of pressure and twist the screwdriver to pry the back panel open. Avoid using excessive force, as you could damage the casing. The key fob should pop open relatively easily.

With the key fob open, you’ll see the battery compartment. Take note of the orientation of the old battery before removing it. Usually, the positive (+) side of the battery faces upwards when the key fob is opened with the buttons facing down. This is important to ensure you insert the new battery correctly. Carefully remove the old battery. You might be able to gently pry it out with your fingernail or the edge of the screwdriver if needed.

Now, take your new CR2032 battery and insert it into the battery compartment. Ensure that the positive (+) side of the battery is facing in the same direction as the old one was. Push the battery down until it is securely in place. After the new battery is correctly installed, align the two halves of the key fob casing. Press them firmly together until they snap back into place. You should hear a click indicating that the case is securely closed.

In most cases, replacing the battery will restore full functionality to your GMC Acadia key fob. Test the key fob buttons to ensure they are now working correctly, locking and unlocking your doors, and starting your vehicle remotely if equipped. However, if you’ve replaced the battery and your key fob still isn’t working, there might be a different issue. This could involve a problem with the key fob itself or your vehicle’s receiver system. If you suspect a more complex problem, it’s best to contact a certified GMC technician. You can schedule a service appointment at our dealership, and our experienced technicians can diagnose and resolve any key fob or vehicle electrical issues you may be experiencing.
