How to Take a Battery Out of a Key Fob: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Is your car key fob not working as reliably as it used to? A common culprit is a dead battery. Luckily, replacing the battery in your key fob is a straightforward task you can often do yourself in just a few minutes. This guide will walk you through the process of how to take a battery out of your key fob, allowing you to restore its functionality and save yourself a trip to the dealership or mechanic.

Before you start, gather a few simple tools: a small flathead screwdriver (or similar thin tool), and the correct replacement battery for your key fob. You can usually find the battery type listed in your car’s owner’s manual or by checking the old battery once you remove it.

The process generally involves these steps:

  1. Detaching the Emergency Key (if applicable): Many key fobs contain a physical emergency key that slides out. Locate the release button or latch, usually a small, often silver button on the fob. Press or slide this release while gently pulling the emergency key out of the fob.

  1. Opening the Key Fob Casing: With the emergency key removed, you’ll typically find a small notch or seam along the edge of the key fob. This is where you’ll need to gently pry the casing open. Insert your small flathead screwdriver or thin tool into this notch.

Apply gentle pressure and twist the screwdriver to separate the two halves of the key fob casing. Be patient and work your way around the seam if necessary. The casing might be a bit tight, especially the first time you open it. Avoid using excessive force, as you don’t want to damage the plastic.

  1. Removing the Old Battery: Once the key fob is open, you’ll see the battery. Take a close look at how the battery is positioned, noting the positive (+) and negative (-) sides. This is crucial for inserting the new battery correctly. Gently remove the old battery. You might be able to pry it out with your small screwdriver, or sometimes it will simply lift out.

With the old battery removed, you are now ready to replace it with a new one and reassemble your key fob.
