It’s a common situation for Tesla Model X owners: your key fob battery starts to weaken. Typically, under normal usage, the key fob battery is designed to last approximately one year. When the battery begins to run low, your Tesla Model X instrument panel will display a message alerting you to this. Fortunately, replacing the battery in your Tesla Model X key fob is a straightforward process that you can easily do yourself.
This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to replace your Tesla X Key Fob Battery, ensuring you can maintain seamless access to your vehicle. Tesla recommends replacing the battery in all key fobs at the same time to ensure consistent performance across all your devices.
-
To begin, place your Tesla Model X key fob button-side down on a soft, clean surface to protect it from scratches. Locate the bottom cover of the key fob. You’ll need a small flat-bladed tool, like a precision screwdriver, or even just your fingernail to gently release this cover.

If you have a lanyard attached to your key fob, you can use it to help remove the cover. Place your thumb firmly against the “X” marked on the bottom cover. Then, pull the lanyard directly towards you. This action leverages the lanyard to push the key fob away from its cover, effectively releasing it. Alternatively, you can use a small flat-bladed tool, a fingernail, or the Tesla-provided tool, inserting it where the lanyard cord attaches to gently pry the cover open.
-
Once the bottom cover is released, you’ll see the battery. The battery needs to be carefully removed from its retaining clips. Angle the battery slightly and gently lift it out of its compartment.

Now, take your new CR2354 battery. This is the specific type of battery required for your Tesla Model X key fob. Insert the new battery with the ‘+’ side facing upwards. The battery compartment is designed for a snug fit, which ensures good contact. To correctly position the battery, slide it in at an angle towards the positive contact (this contact is located near the center of the key fob). Then, press down firmly on the opposite side of the battery to secure it in its intended position. You should feel it click or snap gently into place, ensuring it’s held firmly.

Tesla officially recommends using Panasonic CR2354 batteries for optimal performance and longevity. These batteries are widely available and can be purchased from online retailers, local supermarkets, and drug stores.
CAUTION: When inserting the battery, ensure it presses against the spring on the positive contact. Avoid placing the battery directly on top of the contact and forcing it downwards vertically. Doing so could potentially damage the contact and affect the key fob’s operation.
Note: Before fitting the new battery, it’s a good practice to wipe it clean. Also, try to avoid touching the flat surfaces of the battery with your fingers. Fingerprints on these surfaces can sometimes reduce the battery’s lifespan.
-
With the new battery securely in place, it’s time to reassemble the key fob. Hold the cover at a slight angle and carefully align the tabs located on the widest side of the cover with the corresponding slots on the key fob body. Once aligned, press the cover firmly onto the key fob until you hear and feel it snap securely into place. This ensures the key fob is properly sealed and protected.

Finally, test that your Tesla Model X key fob is working correctly. Attempt to unlock and then lock your vehicle using the key fob buttons. If the car responds as expected, you have successfully replaced your Tesla X key fob battery and are good to go! If you encounter any issues, re-check each step to ensure the battery is correctly installed and the key fob is properly reassembled.
