Programming Harley Key Fob: A Comprehensive Guide

Harley-Davidson motorcycles often come equipped with a proximity key fob, an integral component of their security system. This fob enhances convenience and security by allowing you to start and operate your motorcycle as long as the fob is within a certain range. Once the fob moves out of range, the security system activates, protecting your bike from theft.

But what happens when a key fob is lost or needs replacement? Fortunately, with the right tools and knowledge, programming a new Harley key fob is a straightforward process. Using Snap-on scan tools with software version 17.2 or newer, you can easily program these fobs yourself.

Let’s explore the process of programming a Harley-Davidson key fob, ensuring you can get back on the road quickly and securely. Without a programmed fob, your Harley’s power system won’t even activate, highlighting the importance of a properly functioning key fob.

This guide will walk you through the steps using a Snap-on scan tool.

The process begins with accessing the Body Control Module (BCM) of your Harley Davidson using the scan tool. The tool will automatically identify the specific BCM installed on your motorcycle. Navigate to “Functional Tests” and then to “Special Function” under “Configurations”.

Once the system gathers the necessary information, it will display several options and settings. Notably, you’ll see if “auto-arming” is enabled and your motorcycle’s current PIN number. This PIN is crucial as it allows you to manually start the bike using the turn signals, a procedure detailed in your owner’s manual, in situations where the fob is lost or unavailable.

The key fob information section will display the currently programmed fob number. If you are programming a new fob, this field might show all zeros, indicating it’s not yet recognized by the system. To program the new fob, select the “edit” option.

Clear out any existing numbers, such as the default zeros, and enter the 24-digit number that is provided with your new Harley-Davidson key fob. Double-check the number against the tag that came with the fob to ensure accuracy. Once you’ve entered the number correctly, select “okay” to save.

The system will confirm that the new key fob number is loaded. For verification, you can compare the entered number with the tag again before finalizing. Hit “okay” one last time to complete the programming process. The scan tool will then display “configuration is complete,” asking if you want to start the process again. Select “no” to return to the main menu.

Now, test the newly programmed key fob. Cycle the ignition key to the “on” position. With the programmed fob in proximity, the motorcycle’s lights should illuminate, indicating that the power is now active and the fob is correctly programmed.

As demonstrated, programming a Harley-Davidson key fob using a Snap-on scan tool is a relatively simple procedure. This capability allows technicians and even Harley owners with access to the right tools to manage key fob replacements efficiently, ensuring the continued security and operation of their motorcycles.
